The Southern Highlands Challenge

Achilles receives generous support from the organisers of Australia’s running events and we are pleased to give something back when we can.  One of the key individuals in organising the Challenge, April Palmerlee, is a great supporter of Achilles. We were happy to return some of her many favours to the Club. On August 30th an Achilles team of vision-impaired members and guides attended the Camelbak Southern Highlands Challenge. The main purpose for the trip was not to compete but to lend a hand at the drink and support stations needed for the various events.
The Challenge events are held in the beautiful Wingello Forrest. Ranging from 6K to 50K, these off-road races provide opportunities for the trail novice as well as the experienced ultra runner. One our vision-impaired members, Ben Gibb took the opportunity to enter one of the trail races and performed well in the 6K event. He was guided by Tony Durand and Jacqueline Le. The whole team enjoyed the day handing out drinks and giving to support to the many competitors. [Julia Wenner, a regular Achilles guide, had a successful run in the 25K.]

The trip to the Southern Highlands also included an overnight camp in the forest. This feature was introduced in 2014 largely for logistical reasons and has become an attraction in its own right. Achilles will be back at Wingello for this popular community event in 2016. here to edit.
