1. President’s AddressAfter welcoming the Club Patron and Members, Club President Ellis Janks reported on the activities of the Club in 2017. The key points:
a. Membership and Attendance Numbers continued to grow, particularly in the ranks of volunteers. 39 people with disabilities and 165 different guides had attended training sessions during the year. [The 2016 figures were 33 and 111 respectively.].
Part of the increase in volunteer numbers stemmed from one-off visits from the staff of Apple and JP Morgan as part of their staff volunteer programs.
The Club will maintain its efforts to recruit more members with a disability.
We continue to welcome the members of Forsight, but note with sadness that Sue and Shayne have experienced health issues that have prevented them from attending this year. However, we are pleased that Joe and Woody have attended regularly. We are delighted to have them all at the year-end celebration.
b. Finances Although the Club Treasurer would be presenting the Financial Report, Ellis acknowledged that the Club’s finances remained sound. Individual and corporate donations had boosted the collections made from bank interest, membership fees, clothing sales and the sale of mugs.
Funds had been boosted by donations via Everyday Hero, Grassroots and Benevity.
Individual donations had been received from Andrew Fox, the Ravine Foundation and a number of anonymous donors.
Of note in the corporate sector were the donations from CFSGAM that covered all entry costs in the Mother’s Day Classic and all costs for the national get-together at the Blackmores Sydney Running Hub.
Similarly, the PAYCE Foundation covered the Club’s entries in the Sutherland2Surf.
Ellis thanked the Club Treasurer, Ian Cohen, for his excellent work in keeping the books accurate and up-to-date.
c. EventsThe Sunday morning training sessions are the mainstay of the Club’s year-round activities.
In September the Club had hosted the first ever Achilles National event. The sponorship from CFSGAM allowed members from Canberra and Melbourne to take part in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival alongside their Sydney teammates. In all 28 teams comprising of 80 members took part.
During the year, members with disabilities and their guides had taken part in the Orange City Running Festival, SMH Half Marathon, City to Surf, Blackmore’s Running Festival, Melbourne Marathon Festival, the Sutherland2Surf, numerous parkruns and a number of other community events.
In addition to the running events, members had taken part in bush walks, cycling, golfing, ocean-swimming events and a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro.
d. Training Ellis thanked the Botanic Gardens Trust for allowing the Club to use the Botanic Gardens throughout the year.
Ellis also thanked, the volunteer dog-handlers, the lift-givers and all those who had made the training sessions successful and enjoyable.
e. Website and Social Media In 2017, the new Achilles website became national, with individual pages for Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
Jen, Kay and Pei were thanked for their continued development of the Facebook and Instagram pages, which of a particularly high standard.
f. Achilles Australia With Achilles becoming a national organisation, the previously Sydney-centric clothing was replaced by an “Achilles Australia” set of shirts and singlets. The addition of GUIDE to the volunteers’’ shirts was a welcome development.
The national co-ordination and development were assisted by the establishment of a new Strategic Plan, which will benefit from the involvement of the Canberra and Melbourne Clubs.
